Sorry im a bit late! :) Natural deodorant or the lack of deodorant at all is something that has always made me a bit... well scared! hehe. When I first joined the forum that I frequent, they had posts about how none of them use deodorant or how they make their own, and it totally freaked me out! I already only have one brand and fraguence that works for me as it is, so thinking about trying to use "earth friendly" brands kind of freaked me out.
Apparently breast cancer and althimers have been thought to have a link from deoderant. This has not been proved, but people still beleive it to be true. Have you ever read the label on you hair gel, toothpaste, hair spray, lotion, shaving cream or body wash? They all contain toxic chemicals and here are 5 that MSNBC says we should absolutly avoid-
* Parabens- meaning and including methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl, are preservatives that they say have been linked to breast cancer, and found in breast tumors.
* Aluminum and friends- meaning aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly or any other aluminum compound. Aluminum has been connected to Alzheimer’s disease.
* Triclosan- This is classified as a pesticide by the FDA! It’s thought to contain carcinogenic contaminants and is stored in body fat.
* Talc- Did you know that this baby powder ingrediant can actually contain asbestos?! Well the sad part is that the amount of asbestos is not regulated so you never know how much you will be getting in your talc!
*Propelyn glycol- It is actually believed to be a neurotoxin that may cause kidney or liver damage.
Did you have any idea that this stuff was actually in the products we use daily for ourselves and our family?!? I had NO idea and frankly, I am more scared of using these products than I am of being smelly! Hehe! So I will now be on the search for a natural, 5 product free deoderant that can make me happy! Anyone want to go on the search with me? Anyone use a product like this that they would like to recomend or review for us?
Here are some web sites that show us how to make our own- I might be trying some of these when I get home from my vacation! hehe

Good luck..... and let me know what works for you and what you like! hehe

I am interested in what people use. because I knew about Aluminum and Talc, and I try not to OVER use my deoderant because of it, but I don't want to be smelly... I actually saw some at the natural food store "toms" I believe to be the brand and I stunk WORSE with this than had I not used deoderant in the first place... I am sorry if someone uses Tom's and disagree's maybe it was the fragrance I used... I emailed Tom's and told them about my BAD experience and they sent me more coupons to try other kinds, but I never did because If I recall it was like 5.00 a stick... and well I get deoderant for free most of the time from WAlgreens...
ReplyDeleteSorry to babble but I like this crunchy tuesday I think some items in our daily lives CAN be more dangerous to use than we know it, and this might be one of them. I will let you try those receipes and review them for me ok Josie?
I think we should also do an update on this one later for those of us who brave and try something so we can all talk about the results later. :)
that's my story. I will stop talking now.

I use 1/4c baking soda, 1/4c cornstarch (or arrowroot powder), and 5-6 Tablespoons of unrefined virgin coconut oil. Since it is so warm here I was able to mix this all together and put it into a old baby food jar with a lid. If the coconut oil was hard, I would have combined these ingredients on the stove top to gently melt the oil and then pour into the jar. It solidified overnight. I just use my fingertips to rub some on each morning or when needed. I then wash my hands and they are nice and soft and moisturized. Since this is my first batch to ever make I didn't add any essential oils. I think I will add tea tree oil and lavender next time. I really like this deodorant. It works for me!
ReplyDeleteOne of the main reasons we "stink" is from bacteria. So one of the assumptions is that you can sweat all you want, just stay clean. So you should be able to shower each morning and wash and get all cleaned and use NO deodorant and you will still sweat, that cannot be helped, but your sweat should not stink. I don't know if you know but Matthew McConaughay (sorry for spelling) does not use deodorant at all and it is reported (we all know how we can trust reporters) that he does not have any kind of body order problem and he doesn't use anything, just washes morning and night to keep bacteria away. I also has to do with what kinds of food you eat. Foods such as garlic and alcohol will make your sweat smell like them. So that is also something to keep in mind when going natural with deodorant.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to ramble Josie, but after all taht I will not be joining in the "natural" deodorant challenge.
Haha- that is totally fine! I will make sure I make some up before the relay and make sure I stand really close to you all night! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is something I've been thinking a lot about recently too. I tried one of those deoderant crystals, and while I did stay dry, I found it did nothing for odour. I will definitely be making my own and maybe that will work! Thanks for those links!
ReplyDeleteJust a quick update, thanks to this post, I finally got around to making my own deodorant, and I have to say I'm very impressed! I blogged about it, and just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration!
